End-of-Service Gratuity vs Life Cover in the UAE

End-of-Service Gratuity vs Life Cover

Rahul, 38, has worked at a logistics company in Dubai for nine years. When his wife brought up life insurance over dinner, he shook his head. “I don’t need it,” he said. “My gratuity will look after you and the kids.”

It sounds sensible. After all, nine years of service means a decent end-of-service payout. But when Rahul finally sat down and did the maths, the numbers told a very different story – one that many expats and employees across the UAE have never been shown.

If you have ever thought of your gratuity as your safety net, this guide is for you. We will explain what end-of-service gratuity is, what life cover is, and why they are built to do two completely different jobs.

What is end-of-service gratuity?

End-of-service gratuity is a statutory benefit under UAE labour law. It is a lump sum your employer pays when your employment ends as a reward for your length of service. It is not an insurance product, and it is not a bonus. It is an entitlement that builds up the longer you stay.

How it is generally calculated (UAE mainland)

  • Eligibility: at least one year of continuous service with the employer.
  • First 5 years: 21 days of basic salary for each year of service.
  • Beyond 5 years: 30 days of basic salary for each additional year.
  • Basic salary only: allowances such as housing and transport are generally not included.
  • Cap: the total gratuity cannot exceed two years of basic salary.
  • Part years: service of less than a full year is usually calculated proportionately.

Employees in free zones such as DIFC and ADGM may fall under different schemes, for example, the DIFC Employee Workplace Savings (DEWS) plan, and UAE nationals are covered by pension rules instead. Always check your contract and the latest MOHRE guidance for your situation.

What is Life Cover?

Life cover (life insurance) is a contract between you and an insurer. You pay a premium, and if you pass away during the policy term, the insurer pays an agreed sum to the people you nominate. Some policies also include benefits for terminal illness or total permanent disability, depending on the plan.

The key difference is that the amount is agreed upon upfront. It does not depend on how long you have worked, who your employer is, or how many years you have left in your career.

Back to Rahul: Running the Numbers

Rahul’s basic salary is AED 12,000 a month (his total package is AED 18,000 with allowances). His daily basic wage is AED 400.

Years of serviceApproximate gratuity
2 yearsAED 16,800 (2 × 21 days × AED 400)
5 yearsAED 42,000 (5 × 21 days × AED 400)
9 years (today)AED 90,000 (5 years at 21 days + 4 years at 30 days)

AED 90,000 is a meaningful sum. But now compare it with what his family would actually need if his income stopped:

  • Monthly household expenses of, say, AED 15,000 mean the gratuity covers roughly six months.
  • An outstanding home loan, car finance and credit card balances do not disappear.
  • Two children still have years of school fees ahead and, later, university costs.
  • A spouse may need time to find work or to relocate, and a visa sponsored through Rahul may be affected.

A common rule of thumb is that life cover should be a multiple of annual income, often discussed in the range of 10 to 15 times, though the right figure depends on debts, dependants and goals. On Rahul’s package, that points to a figure in the millions, not tens of thousands.

The timing problem

If Rahul had passed away in his second year of work, the gratuity would have been only around AED 16,800. A life cover policy with a sum assured of AED 1 million, taken on day one, would have paid the same AED 1 million in year two as in year nine.

Five Reasons Gratuity Cannot Replace Life Cover

1. It is small early in your career.

Gratuity grows with service. The years when your children are youngest and your loans are largest are often the years when your gratuity is smallest.

2. It is capped.

The two-year basic salary ceiling means it can never grow in line with your family’s real needs.

3. It is based on basic salary only.

If your allowances make up a big share of your package, your gratuity reflects only a part of what your family actually lives on.

4. It depends on one employer.

Change jobs, and your service clock starts again. Life cover goes with you; gratuity does not.

5. It is also your future savings.

For many expats, gratuity is the nest egg for a move home, a new business or retirement. Counting it as your family’s protection and your retirement fund at the same time means counting it twice.

A Quick Word on Employer Group Life Cover

Some employers provide group life insurance as part of the benefits package, often expressed as a multiple of salary. It is worth asking HR for the details. Remember that this cover typically ends when you leave the company, may be lower than your family’s real needs, and is not something you control. Many people use it as a base and add individual cover on top.

How the Two Work Together

Think of it this way: gratuity is a reward for your past service; life cover is protection for your family’s future. Used together, they do different jobs well.

  • Gratuity can fund your next chapter: relocation, a career break, a deposit or a business idea.
  • Life cover can clear debts, replace income and secure education so that your family’s plans do not depend on timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my family receive my gratuity if I pass away while employed?

Generally, any end-of-service dues owed to an employee who passes away are payable to their heirs, subject to the applicable legal process. The amount, however, is still based only on your service and basic salary.

Is gratuity the same as a pension?

No. Gratuity is a one-time lump sum. UAE nationals are covered by pension rules, while most expatriate employees on the mainland receive gratuity instead.

Can I use my gratuity to pay for life insurance?

You can use your savings however you choose, but life insurance is usually paid for through regular premiums. Many people find that a modest, steady premium is easier to manage than drawing on a lump sum later.

How much life cover do I need?

It depends on your income, debts, dependants and long-term goals. A licensed adviser can help you work out a figure that fits your situation rather than relying on a generic formula.

Key Takeaways

  • Gratuity rewards your years of service. Life cover protects your family if you are no longer there.
  • Gratuity depends on time served; life cover is a fixed amount you choose.
  • Gratuity alone is rarely enough to protect a family, especially in the early and middle years of a career.
  • The strongest plan uses both, each for the job it was designed to do.
